There are many types of police jobs out there, from Parole Officer, to Police Officer, to Chief of Police. Here, we will focus on two highly important types of police jobs that are rapidly increasing: Police Officers and Detectives. Police officers and detectives enjoy solving problems that have to do with protecting people and their property. Citizens depend on these workers to come to their aid when there is a problem that requires their special skills and expertise.
Most of us are aware of the police when driving and noticing them pulling a car over to perhaps issue a ticket. However, we rarely are aware of the many other responsibilities they have that often go unnoticed. With some police jobs such as Police Officer, however, some may drive in unmarked cars and wear plain clothes, making it so we may not even know they are among us in a group.
Uniformed Police Officers in the types of police jobs that work in municipal police departments, small communities, and rural areas have general law enforcement duties including maintaining regular patrols and responding to calls. They may direct traffic at the scene of an accident or fire, investigate a burglary, or give first aid to a victim.
In large police departments, police jobs are quite apparent and police officers are usually assigned to a specific type of duty. Many urban police agencies are becoming involved in community policing, whereby an officer builds a rapport with citizens and works closely with the public to fight crime (e.g. neighborhood watch programs). These types of police jobs are become more and more apparent within communities.
Some police officers specialize in police jobs in diverse fields such as chemical and microscopic analysis, training and firearms instructor, or handwriting and fingerprint identification. Others may work with special units such as horseback, bicycle, motorcycle or harbor patrol, canine corps, or special weapons and tactics (SWAT) or emergency response teams. A few local and special law enforcement officers primarily perform jail-related police job duties or work in courts. So, as you can see, the police job as Police Officer can be quite diversified.
The other type of police jobs is that of Detectives. Detectives are plain-clothes investigators. They gather facts and collect evidence for criminal cases. In this area of police job work, some are assigned to inter-agency task forces to combat specific types of crime. Detectives examine records, conduct interviews, observe suspect activities, and participate in raids or arrests. Detectives and State and Federal agents, and inspectors usually specialize in one of a variety of violations such as homicide or fraud, and police jobs like these have grown tremendously over the years.
